Abbes Khelfa is an Algerian transplant who started his first restaurant at age 18 in Algeria. In 1990, at age 23, he moved to USA and has remained in the same business for over 30 years.
In 1991, Abbes started working at Angora Cafe in Boston as a chef for 2 years. Within a few years, he became a business partner in the same restaurant. During this time, his desire to succeed was enormous and he was a fast learner. He frequently associated with an older generation of excellent cooks (from Turkey, Palestine and Israel) and quickly learned the tricks and techniques of making exotic authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. By the late 90s, Abbes had become a confident self-assured chef and entrepreneur; opening his 1st restaurant named "Andalus Cafe" in Boston.
In 2012, Abbes moved with his family to North Carolina. With his experience as a chef, entrepreneur and successful business owner he opened a new restaurant in Chapel Hill, North Carolina called "Hummus Cafe" on Franklin Street. His style of cooking Mediterranean food and entrepreneurship quickly caught on with the public and the restaurant was a great success in a very short time. For the first time in North Carolina, the Hummus Cafe began offering a healthy, frozen yogurt made from a family recipe that was available in a variety of flavors and toppings and the customers went crazy. Rated as the best frozen yogurt in town, Abbes sincerely believes that there is nothing like it- the only way to know for yourself is to try it when you visit North Carolina.
Shortly thereafter, Abbes opened another restaurant on Airport Boulevard in Morrisville. While serving the same Middle Eastern foods as his Chapel Hill store, this location also serves made from scratch pizza with a variety of toppings. He hopes to bring the frozen yogurt to this store soon as well.
At his Mediterranean restaurants, Abbes strives to give you that something special feeling the moment you walk inside. The restaurants offer a diverse menu which includes some of his favorite dishes like falafel, shawarma, chicken and lamb as well variety of fresh hummus which is made daily. All meat products are certified Halal.
The food is always fresh and made from natural ingredients, thus, making the restaurant a number one choice in the area. Finally, what sets the restaurant apart from many other eateries is the friendly staff and customer service. Abbes has always instilled a family friendly environment in his restaurants and treats everyone as if they were his own family.
